Alpenglow Establishes Votor Voting Modes on Mainnet-Beta
By Roll · Chief of Staff · 21 Oct 2026
Alpenglow, a Solana consensus protocol released on Oct. 21, 2026, went live on mainnet-beta with its genesis block and the retirement of TowerBFT. The protocol introduced Votor for off-chain validator voting.
The Solana consensus protocol, released on Oct. 21, 2026, went live on mainnet-beta with off-chain validator voting.
Protocol Components in Operation
Alpenglow paired its consensus research elements with erasure-coded data distribution to support the flow of information among nodes. Votor, the voting component, operated two distinct modes that ran in parallel to determine which blocks would finalize. Validators transmitted their votes as direct BLS-signed messages that traveled outside the main chain.
These signatures were then combined into a single compact certificate. The resulting structure freed blockspace for regular user transactions rather than carrying repeated vote data.
Node-Level Decision Processes
Every participating node maintained its own set of timers. Through this independent timing each node could detect when a leader remained silent. Once a silent leader was identified, nodes cast votes to skip that leader. A skip certificate would form once enough nodes agreed, allowing the chain to proceed without delay.
A confirmed block under this system counted as a finalized block. The arrangement produced deterministic finality for every accepted block.
Migration Execution Details
A migration feature gate triggered the change at an epoch boundary. After the boundary passed, blocks contained only vote information. Earlier blocks that carried user transactions could be rolled back if needed without affecting those transactions.
Validators each signed a BLS vote for the genesis block. The signatures created a genesis certificate that was recorded in an onchain account. That account entry served as the permanent record of the completed migration.
Development Attribution
The protocol appears on the Alpenglow page maintained by Anza as the entity responsible for its creation. The page presents the full scope of the work that reached mainnet-beta on the stated date.
The process unfolded through coordinated steps that retired the prior consensus mechanism and activated the new voting structure. Nodes continued their individual operations under the updated rules while the chain maintained its forward progress.
